Where Plan A Came From
Years ago, I walked out of a little grocery store in Maui and saw a BMW Z3 with a license plate that said PLAN A.
I was curious, so I asked the owner what it meant. He looked me straight in the eyes and said:
My own Plan A license plate after moving from Maui to North Carolina — a daily reminder that there is no Plan B.
"There is no Plan B. There is no failure. There is only Plan A."
A few months later at a Christmas party in Wailea, a man walked up to me and asked how things were going at BMW. I must've had that bewildered look, because I was wondering who this guy was who obviously knew me.
That's when he said, "I am Plan A."
What a chance meeting again. It reinforced our first conversation—and now I had a name for what had been the foundation of my past successes.
I didn't fully realize it then, but that phrase defined the life I'd been building all along—four businesses created, scaled, and sold.
Not because I was lucky.
Not because I was smarter.
But because I refused to build my future around a fallback plan.
Plan A thinking had been the mindset that drove every decision, every pivot, every win—but I never had a name for it until then.
Now I'm handing this philosophy to business owners and people who sell for a living—the people who keep the economy moving, feed families, serve communities, and build their dreams one decision at a time:
